Mommy Makeover

Consultations offered at our two convenient locations in Marin County and Berkeley

Motherhood is a wonderful gift, but pregnancy and breastfeeding can result in drastic changes to the body that leave many women struggling to regain their pre-baby body. A Mommy Makeover is designed to help correct the parts of the body that change the most during pregnancy: the abdomen and the breasts.

By combining a breast lift, breast augmentation, liposuction, and a tummy tuck, Dr. Kyle Belek helps mothers in Marin and Berkeley feel like their old selves again, or an even more enhanced self.

What is a Mommy Makeover?

A Mommy Makeover is a combination of body contouring procedures which helps mothers to regain their pre-pregnancy figure. After pregnancy, many women are uncomfortable with the appearance of their bodies, and a Mommy Makeover can help them to regain confidence and body image. Since the breasts and abdomen are the two parts of the body most affected by pregnancy, a Mommy Makeover frequently consists of a combination of breast lift or augmentation, liposuction, and tummy tuck.

Benefits of a Mommy Makeover

After pregnancy it is not uncommon for mothers to have experienced significant changes to their figure. In some cases, depending on age and other considerations, it may be extremely difficult to achieve a figure like the one a mother had before the pregnancy and birth. The benefits of a Mommy Makeover include the following:

  • Can improve self-esteem and body image
  • Recover a pre-pregnancy figure
  • Clothing fits better

Optional Procedures

A Mommy Makeover may consist of a breast lift, breast augmentation, liposuction, and a tummy tuck depending on the patient’s aesthetic goals. However, since not all women experience the same body changes following pregnancy, some may not need to undergo all four procedures. During the consultation, Dr. Belek works personally with every patient to help determine the optimal combination of procedures for their body and lifestyle. In some cases, women may benefit from alternative procedures we offer.

Breast Lift

breast liftA breast lift procedure is designed to correct the appearance of sagging, drooping, or pendulous breasts, which can occur due to pregnancy and breastfeeding. Depending on the degree of sagging, clinically known as ptosis, Dr. Belek will make an incision around the areolas and down to the base of the breast. Depending on the level of ptosis, an incision along the breast crease may be necessary in order to lift the breast for optimal positioning. By raising the bust to a more youthful elevation, the breasts themselves will also have a perkier aesthetic and give the patient great contour.

Breast Augmentation

Following breastfeeding, some women report a great loss of volume in their breasts. In order to counteract this effect, Dr. Belek can perform a breast augmentation. A breast augmentation can either be achieved through breast implants or fat grafting. Fat grafting is a process in which fat is removed from one part of the body using liposuction and then repurposed in the breasts for natural augmentation. This option is attractive to many women who do not wish to utilize synthetic materials; however, it may not be able to offer the same dramatic results as implants.

Breast Reduction

Not all women want added breast volume after having children and breastfeeding. Opposite of the aforementioned procedure, a breast reduction can be performed on women who wish to decrease the size of their enlarged breasts after pregnancy. This is generally performed by removing breast tissue during a breast lift; in rare cases, liposuction can be used for breast reduction. Please feel free to inquire about this option during the initial consultation.

Liposuction

Sometimes no amount of diet and exercise can help shed stubborn pockets of fat that accumulate around the thighs, abdomen, and flanks following pregnancy. Dr. Belek can help women get rid of those fat deposits once and for all by utilizing liposuction. Liposuction is typically performed in combination with the tummy tuck procedure. In some cases, the fat harvested from the abdomen can then be reutilized to naturally augment the breasts in a fat grafting procedure. In any case, liposuction will help women regain their feminine contour following pregnancy.

Tummy Tuck

During pregnancy, the abdomen stretches and leaves loose excess skin around the lower abdomen. Diet and exercise have no effect on excess skin; the only way to correct this issue is with a tummy tuck. The tummy tuck procedure involves a discreet incision by the pubic line from hip to hip that can easily be hidden under underwear or a bikini. Then, the doctor will tighten the muscles in the abdomen and excise excess skin for improved contour and appearance.

Although a tummy tuck will not completely remove stretch marks that may have occurred as a result of the skin stretching, it can reduce their appearance, particularly where the excess skin is excised. In some cases, women may benefit most from an extended tummy tuck that offers more comprehensive results. This involves an extended incision to the flanks.

Ideal Candidates

In most cases, candidates for a Mommy Makeover procedure should be done having children, as future pregnancies can negatively impact their results. A Mommy Makeover is not a weight loss solution, so, candidates should already be at a stable weight and close to their weight loss goal.

Although the majority of our Mommy Makeover patients are in their 30s and 40s, there is no “ideal time” to have a “makeover” following pregnancy. Women should never feel like they need to put aside their aesthetic desires, whether the children are still young or all grown up.

Finally, patients should be in good physical and mental health. It is important that they have realistic expectations for the procedure and fully understand what a Mommy Makeover can and cannot accomplish. In order to get an authentic idea of the results they can expect, we recommend that patients take a look at the Before and After photos of some of our previous patients.

Procedure

The Mommy Makeover surgery varies depending on the patient’s aesthetic goals. During the consultation, Dr. Kyle Belek and the patient will discuss the various options available, as well as the patient’s expectations and desired outcome. The procedure is usually performed in one day under general anesthesia as an outpatient procedure.

Following the surgery, patients will be able to wake up and recover from the anesthesia at their own pace in our recovery room. There, patients will have full access to Dr. Belek’s highly qualified team that will make sure the patient is comfortable and properly prepared to return home for recovery. Prior to surgery, we ask that patients make arrangements for somebody else to drive them home from the procedure.

Mommy Makeover Recovery and Results

Depending on the procedures, recovery time for a Mommy Makeover varies.

Most patients require 10-14 days of recovery time, and light activity can be resumed typically by the third week. During this time, patients will be prescribed pain medication to help ease discomfort. Results will begin to be noticeable at this time, and final results will become apparent within 2-6 months. Results can be extremely long lasting. In order to prolong the results of a Mommy Makeover, we recommend that patients maintain a steady diet and exercise regimen.

Most patients respond with a positive outcome to their Mommy Makeover procedure, and report that the surgery helps to improve their body image and self-esteem. However, the procedure may not completely restore your pre-pregnancy appearance, and some of the effects of pregnancy may still be visible. In order to make sure that the patient is healing properly and that optimal results are achieved, we ask all patients to return for a follow-up appointment with Dr. Belek.

Consultation

During the initial Mommy Makeover consultation in one of our Bay Area locations, Dr. Belek will talk to the patient about their concerns and determine whether or not the patient would be a good candidate for a Mommy Makeover procedure. In order to make this determination, he will need to perform a physical examination. We ask that the patient inform Dr. Belek of any medications they are currently taking, medical conditions they may suffer from, and past surgeries they have undergone. Please also let the doctor know about the possibility of any future pregnancies; he will most likely recommend waiting to get the surgery until after.

If the patient is a good candidate for a Mommy Makeover, then Dr. Belek will work with them to develop a personalized treatment plan that fits their body and lifestyle. In some cases, the doctor may recommend an alternative procedure in order to help the patient achieve their aesthetic desires.

We encourage patients to ask any questions they may have during the consultation. Our goal is to make each of our patients feel as comfortable and secure about their decision as possible.

Cost

Since the Mommy Makeover procedure is uniquely customized for each and every patient, the price of the procedure will reflect that. The cost can vary depending on factors such as procedures and techniques performed, anesthesia, and after-care decisions. Dr. Belek will be more than happy to discuss the realistic costs of the procedure at the end of the consultation, when he has a better idea of the specifics of the individual’s case. For patients concerned with pricing, we recommend that they set up an appointment with our Patient Care Consultant at our Berkeley office to discuss our financing options.
