What is Breast Augmentation?
Breast augmentation is a process that inserts breast implants to increase the size of the breast or restore its volume. Restoration may be needed after pregnancy or even significant weight reduction. Women who have insecurities about the shape and size of their breast can look towards breast augmentation surgery as a way to improve their balance and proportions to their specific body type.
There are no two breast augmentation procedures alike; each surgery is completely customizable to meet each patient’s individual wants and needs. Patients are able to choose their implant shape, size, surface, composition, profile, placement, and incision location with the help and guidance of Marin and Berkeley’s breast augmentation expert Dr. Kyle Belek.
With today’s music videos, television shows, and blockbuster movies, people have this idea of what “perfect hair” or a “perfect body” or “perfect breasts” should look like. Anatomically, there is no perfect “anything” (perfection is in the eye of the beholder.) There is too great of a variation in breast size, shape, and personal preferences that we cannot place such a general label. However, some breast characteristics that people may find ideal are perky, proportionate, and symmetrical. The goal of breast augmentation is to provide you with the enhanced aesthetic change you desire, and that may very well be considered “perfect” by you.
Benefits of Breast Augmentation
In May 2013, it was reported in the official journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, that 98% of women undergoing breast augmentation believed that the results either met or even exceeded expectations.
In addition to a high satisfaction rate among patients, many receive the following benefits:
- Restore symmetry and size
- Improve balance and proportions
- Potentially improve self-esteem and body image

Breast Implant Options to Consider
The following are breast implant options available. Dr. Belek will go through the pros and cons of each option during your consultation so you can make an informed decision.
Most people refer to the size of someone’s breasts in cup size, such as A, B, C, D, DD, etc. Although this is a commonly known reference, it is not a reliable source for breast augmentation, since one store’s C could be another store’s DD. Breast implants use cubic centimeters (cc) for the measurement of volume.
Breast implants are offered in both teardrop (anatomical) shape or round. Tear drop implants are contoured to resemble the natural curvature of breasts. Round implants possess more volume at the top for a more perky, full look.
The composition of a breast implant can be silicone or saline. A silicone implant is a cohesive prefilled gel that holds together as a semi-solid mass. A saline implant is placed in the breast as an empty shell and filled with a sterile saline solution once properly positioned in the pocket. One is not better than the other. The composition chosen for your breast augmentation surgery will depend on your body type and personal preference.
Both saline and silicone implants are bound in a silicone shell that has either a smooth or textured surface. Smooth implants, as the name implies, are soft to the touch and are able to rotate in the breast pocket without contour change. Textured implants provide security of position in the pocket. Teardrop implants can only be offered as textured since their movement within the pocket will cause visible change. Round implants can come as either smooth or textured.
The profile of an implant refers to the projection measurement from the chest. It is generally categorized as low, moderate, moderate plus, or high. Lower profile implants provide better proportion for women with wider chests, and higher profile implants suite narrower chests. Dr. Belek will be able to determine the ideal profile for your body type during your consultation examination.
Dr. Belek creates a pocket inside of the breast to place the implant in. This pocket can be created in front of or behind the chest muscle. Placing the implant in front of the muscle (sub-glandular) requires a pocket made directly behind the mammary gland underneath the breast tissue. This option is often chosen for those who have a lot of breast tissue as the tissue can cover the implant edges sufficiently. Placing the implant in a pocket made behind the muscle (sub-muscular) is generally reserved for those who do not have a lot of breast tissue, so the muscles acts as a cover for the implant edges.
Dr. Belek can insert your implants in one of four different incision locations. The incision locations chosen for your individual case will be determined during a consultation.
- Inframammary Crease Incision – The inframammary crease is the natural fold at the base of the breast. An incision created along this fold gives Dr. Belek good access to create a pocket either behind or in front of the muscle. This option is often chosen for the minimal scar visibility as it blends well with the inframammary crease. It also provides the option to use this same incision for additional breast procedures.
- Periareolar Incision – Periareolar is in reference to the bottom half of the areola. An incision made following this pattern makes for inconspicuous scarring and the option for adding complementing breast procedures.
- Transumbilical Incision – A transumbilical incision is made in the belly button. This is the most discreet incision location option, but can only be performed with saline implants since it is located so far from the breasts.
- Transaxillary Incision – A transaxillary incision is made in the armpit (axilla.) Women opt for this incision method for its concealed scarring.
During your consultation in our Marin or Berkeley office, you and Dr. Belek will discuss your expectations for the procedure, and what your desired outcome will be. You will discuss desired size and shape, incision location, as well as your desired type of implant. He will then perform a detailed examination you both will decide on the perfect individualized procedure plan that will give you optimal results. Please feel free to ask any and all questions you may have at this time.
Please wear a loose fitting top the day of your surgery. You will need to arrange for someone to drive you to and from surgery, and may need to have someone stay with you for at least the first night following surgery.
Breast augmentation surgery is performed under general anesthesia on an outpatient basis.
Incisions are made in inconspicuous areas around the breast to minimize visible scarring. The incision sites will vary depending on your particular anatomy, as well as your preferred location. After the incision is made, the implant is inserted into a pocket under the pectoral muscle or directly behind the breast tissue above the pectoral muscle. Once the implants have been properly positioned, the incisions are closed.
While breast augmentation can provide spectacular body contouring results on its own, complementing procedures can be performed at the same time, such as a breast lift, tummy tuck, and/or liposuction. Breast augmentation will increase breast volume, but it cannot address a large amount of sagging breast skin, in which case pairing a breast lift with breast augmentation can give you a lifted, full bust.
Mothers who have recently given birth often times choose to undergo a tummy tuck and/or liposuction in conjunction with their breast procedure; this combination of procedures is referred to as a mommy makeover.
A tummy tuck can tighten stretched abdominal muscles and remove lax abdomen skin, and liposuction will remove stubborn localized fat deposits. To see if you could benefit from complementing procedures, please feel free to contact us to schedule a private consultation.
After your procedure you will be placed in a surgical bra and dressing to help your breasts form to their new contour and reduce swelling. This can be removed to shower, but other than that must be worn at all times for a few weeks or until otherwise instructed. Sleeping with your head slightly elevated will also help reduce any swelling, and pain medications can be prescribed to help keep you comfortable.
Most patients report a very good outcome from breast augmentation surgery. Patients normally require a 24 – 48 hour post-surgery recovery time. After a reduced-activity period of a few days, your normal activity can resume at your surgeon’s discretion. You may experience some soreness for a few weeks. You may need to wear a special supportive bra for a few months after surgery to help reshape your breasts.
The cost of your breast augmentation surgery will depend on the extent of your specific case. Undergoing complementing procedures will alter the price. Please schedule a one on one consultation with Dr. Belek to discuss all of your option and see if breast augmentation surgery is right for you.
