Also known as a mastopexy, breast lift surgery raises the breasts by removing excess skin and tightening the surrounding tissue while reshaping and supporting the new breast contour. A breast lift is also performed to reduce the size of areolas that have become enlarged over time, and can rejuvenate your figure with a more uplifted and youthful breast profile. This procedure does not increase breast volume, so it is very commonly performed with breast augmentation for women who want a both lifted and larger bust.
Reasons to Get a Breast Lift
There are several reasons to undergo breast lift surgery. Many of the reasons are normally the result of natural factors such as pregnancy and drastic weight change. Below is a list of the most common reasons women consider breast lift surgery in Marin County and Berkeley:
- Weight fluctuations
Good candidates for a breast lift are women who are in good healthy but experience sagging breasts. Sagging generally occurs in both breasts, but it is also normal for one breast to sag more that the other. Women seeking mastopexy should be happy with the size of their breasts because a breast lift procedure does not add volume. Women do however have the option of undergoing breast augmentation at the same time for a full, lifted bust. A breast lift with a breast reduction is also possible for women who wish to decrease the size of their breasts.
No two cases are alike, so to help create customized surgical plans for each patient, identifying the degree of ptosis, or breast sagging, is important for optimal patient results. Ptosis is often categorized into one of four degrees: Grade 1, Grade 2, Grade 3, and pseudoptosis.
Grade 1 represents mild sagging of the breasts, where the areolas are at the same level as the inframammary fold, or breast crease, and majority of the lower portion of breast tissue is visible. Grade 2 represents slightly more sagging, where the areolas are below the inframammary fold but some breast tissue is still visible below the areolas. Grade 3 represents advanced sagging, where the areolas are at the lowest part of the breasts and no breast tissue is visible below; in some cases the nipples point downward. Pseudoptosis is where the areolas are above the inframammary fold but majority of breast tissue hangs below them, so the breasts lay more flat against the chest.
If you categorize yourself in any of the aforementioned levels, please feel free to schedule a consultation with Dr. Kyle Belek today and he will gladly assess your candidacy in a consultation exam.
Techniques We Use
Dr. Belek will choose one of four lifting techniques based on his findings during your consultation examination and your desired results. Additional breast procedures such as breast augmentation will also hold impact on this decision, as Dr. Belek will try and use the least amount of incisions possible to accomplish your aesthetic goals.
Periareolar & Circumareolar Mastopexy
These two techniques utilize areola incisions to lift breasts that marginally sag. The periareolar incision is made on the top half of the areola, while the circumareolar incision circles the areola border. Major sagging can not be reversed with these techniques.
The vertical mastopexy, alternatively referred to as the lollipop lift or keyhole lift, uses a circumareolar incision plus an incision made vertically from the base of the areola to the inframammary fold. More tissue and skin can be removed and reshaped with this technique, and the areola can be reshaped to match the new breast contour.
This technique provides the most lift out of the previously mentioned three techniques. Following the shape of an anchor, incisions are made around the areola, vertically down to the crease of the breast, and along the inframammary fold. More tissue and skin can be removed with the additional breast crease incision, providing an opportunity for women with significant sagging to reshape their breasts and create a lifted, proportionate bust. The nipples can also be made smaller to aesthetically match.
Before & After Photos
During your initial consultation at either our Marin County or Berkeley office, our surgical team will discuss your expectations and desired outcome of breast lift surgery. There are multiple types of techniques that can be performed, and the appropriate method will be determined by your specific body figure. Before and after pictures can be provided if you want an idea of potential outcomes, but remember that results vary between patients since each technique is customized to the individual. Please share your medical history and previous surgeries as these may affect the technique chosen for your case. Ask any questions you may have, including inquiries about additional procedures and pricing.
Preparing for Breast Lift Surgery
- Additional medical evaluations and tests may be required prior to the surgery date.
- Refrain from smoking and taking anti inflammatory medications for 3 weeks before the surgery date.
- Dr. Belek will prescribe medications that you will need for your recovery period; please make sure to pick these up in a timely manner.
- Arrange transportation to take you home after you’re released from the recovery room; breast lift patients cannot drive on their own. It would be ideal if this person stays the night with you to help with initial recovery.
- Make sure you have enough pillows at home to keep your back propped up while recovering. This helps to reduce swelling and promote quicker healing.
Further individualized preparation instructions will be given to you after Dr. Belek performs your initial consultation examination.
The Breast Lift Procedure
- Incisions are made to the breast in specific areas, depending on the technique.
- The underlying breast tissue is lifted and reshaped to improve contour and firmness.
- Excess breast skin is removed to accommodate for a loss of elasticity.
- The remaining skin is tightened and the incisions are closed.
Breast lift surgery takes about 2 hours if not performed with other procedures. It is an outpatient procedure that is performed using general anesthesia. Once the surgery is completed, you will be transferred to our recovery room where our skilled nursing staff will monitor you and make sure you are as comfortable as possible as you wake from the anesthesia. When you are cleared by Dr. Belek, your arranged ride can take you home to rest.
Immediately following surgery you will be placed in surgical dressing and a support bra; please do not remove these items until instructed to. Depending on the case, drainage tubes may be required to capture excess fluids. These are typically removed in a few days, and special care instructions will be provided for the days before removal. Slight swelling and bruising after surgery are normal and will go away in time; medications will be prescribed to alleviate any discomfort.
Breast lift patients can resume normal activities in three to four days, and more strenuous activities can be resumed in three to five weeks. You will come in for postoperative visits with Dr. Belek to assess your recovery process and make sure you are healing as planned.
Most patients respond favorably to breast lift surgery, and results of the procedure are immediately visible. Over time, post-surgical bruising and swelling will resolve and incision lines will fade. It’s important that surgical incisions are not subjected to excessive force, swelling, abrasion, or motion during healing.
Final results of your breast lift will appear over the next few months as breast shape and position continue to settle. Over time, your breasts can continue to change due to gravity and aging. Maintaining your weight and keeping a healthy lifestyle will help you to retain your new look longer.
One of the more common plastic surgery procedure combinations is breast augmentation with breast lift. Women who experience breast sagging who also desire an increase in breast size can benefit from this unification since breast lift does not increase breast volume. Women have the ability to choose from an array of implant options that will provide them with customized, full and lifted results.
This clever name is used to described a series of body and breast procedures that enhance the figure of mothers. The abdomen and breasts are the two areas compromised most after childbirth and breastfeeding, so this surgery is designed to enhance just that. Moms have the choice of undergoing liposuction, tummy tuck, fat transfer, breast lift, and/or breast augmentation. The mommy makeover is completely customizable, so patients can choose as few or as many procedures as they desire depending on the amount of “makeover” they are seeking.
Breast lift surgery pricing is determined by the extent of the individual case and the choice to undergo complementing procedures. Dr. Belek will be able to give you an estimation of costs after an initial consultation and examination.
