Disproportionately sized or misshapen ears can be a source of shame and embarrassment for children and adults alike. Prominent ears can be especially difficult for children, who are often more likely to be the victims of teasing and bullying.

Kyle Belek MD and his team of cosmetic professionals can help you achieve the proportionate, aesthetically appealing ears you have always wanted. Our highly skilled team has an excellent safety record with ear reshaping surgery, and can provide you with stunning results.

How does ear reshaping surgery work?

Otoplasty, commonly referred to as ear reshaping surgery, can correct ears that are abnormally shaped or overly prominent. This may be caused by having an excess of cartilage in the ear, or when the ridge of cartilage at the top of the ear does not fold properly during development. Dr. Belek will sculpt the cartilage in your ears into a natural shape. This can increase the balance and proportion in your ears and improve the symmetry of your facial features.

Ideal adult candidates for ear reshaping surgery are healthy, non-smoking individuals with a positive outlook and specific goals for the procedure.

Children who wish to undergo ear reshaping surgery should be healthy, with no history of life-threatening illnesses or untreated chronic ear infections. They must be able to follow instructions well and be old enough to have developed ear cartilage that will maintain correction. The child also needs to be able to communicate their feelings and desired outcome from the procedure.

Outlook and benefits

Following your surgery, a soft dressing will be applied to your ears. The bandages will remain for a few days, and some patients experience some mild discomfort. You will be advised to avoid putting pressure on your ears for up to one week. Sometimes a headband is recommended to hold the ears in the desired position.

The risks of ear reshaping surgery are minimal. There will be a small scar behind the ear after healing, however this scar will be located in the natural crease behind the ear, making it difficult to see.

Following ear reshaping surgery, most patients report an increase in self-esteem and confidence. They are also pleased with how the procedure improved the symmetry and aesthetic balance of their facial features.
